Geary Street, Union Square Landmark, San Francisco, Closed Abruptly After Sinkhole Develops

Geary Street Closed to Vehicle and Pedestrian Traffic

The bustling intersection at Geary and Stockton in San Francisco’s Union Square is closed indefinitely following the sudden development of a large sinkhole. Initially reported around noon on Thursday, the sinkhole quickly expanded to encompass three lanes of traffic on Geary Street.

Emergency Crews on Scene

Emergency crews responded swiftly to the scene to secure the area and begin repairs. Geary Street is now closed to both vehicle and pedestrian traffic between Stockton Street and Mason Street as crews work to stabilize the sinkhole and make repairs to the damaged roadway.

The cause of the sinkhole is still under investigation, but city officials believe it may have been the result of a broken water main.

Significant Traffic Delays Expected

The closure of Geary Street is expected to cause significant traffic delays in the Union Square area. Motorists are advised to avoid the area if possible and use alternate routes until repairs are complete.

The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) is providing updates on the situation via its website and Twitter feed.

No Injuries Reported

Fortunately, no injuries have been reported as a result of the sinkhole. Pedestrians are urged to use caution in the area and follow the directions of emergency personnel.

Repairs Expected to Take Several Days

It is estimated that repairs to the sinkhole will take several days to complete. The SFMTA will provide updates on the progress of repairs as they become available.

In the meantime, motorists are advised to plan alternate routes and allow for extra travel time when driving in the Union Square area.
